Two-Part Two-Spirit Training
Aug. 28-29, 2012, Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Lac La Flambeau, WIS.
“Best Two-Spirit training I have ever attended and encourage anyone who is interested in learning on how to work more effectively with Two-Spirit community members to consider this training.” – Participant at the training
“The presenters’ approach to the subject matter, their process and teaching styles and their knowledge of historical and contemporary Two-Spirit community made this training engaging and interactive and one that I take to heart and will take home to make my community a better place for our Two-Spirit community members. Job well done!” – Participant at the training
Harlan Pruden, NE2SS Council-Member, and Dr. Barbara Warren, NE2SS Principle Consultant, co-lead “Two-Spirit Then and Now: Reclaiming Our Place of Honor” 2-day training for the staff of the state of Wisconsin’s 12 Tribal HIV/AIDS programs.
The training was to enable participants to work more effectively with Two-Spirit individual that are accessing services from their programs. This training provided participants, both Native and non-Native, an opportunity to examine and discuss how historical trauma led to the dissolution of the role and the displacement of Two-Spirit people from within their native communities. The connection between the displacement of Two-Spirit people from their heritage, and who routinely experience stigma and discrimination in both in both Native and mainstream society, was presented and discussed in terms of the subsequent impact on their health and mental health risks, health disparities and recovery support needs. The workshop also examined evidence-based interventions that integrate healing approaches from both traditional and contemporary frames with the outcome of culturally appropriate services and practices.
The training concluded with providing participants with current resources for further learning and links to Two-Spirit organizations in Canada and USA.
